Fall 2015 LORI Delivery Items Count Results

About the Survey

LORI libraries statewide participated in the biannual Delivery Items Count in October 2015. 217 library facilities that receive OLIS-LORI Delivery services recorded and reported their out-going item counts. Altogether, 40,716 items were transported in the LORI Delivery system during the week. The survey took place from October 18 through October 24, 2015.

For most libraries, the heaviest delivery traffic occurs on Monday. On Monday, October 19, 2015, 8,166 items were placed in delivery bins to be transported from LORI libraries.

Survey summaries

The fall 2015 items count marked a significant decline by 2,670 items in the week’s total comparing to the same survey conducted in fall 2014. While many factors may have attributed to the decline, these two were significant:

  1. The rise of the e-resource usage. Most libraries provide a portion of the library materials in electronic format. Patrons are able to check out items remotely. The circulation models varied but the impact to the physical items usage is universal.  We have seen the steady increase of the e-resources and the decline of the physical item check-outs.
  2. Membership changes in the HELIN consortium. At the time of the October 2015 survey the academic consortium experienced changes in membership and shared access to the ILS. Without direct access to some libraries’ holdings information, sharing among the academic libraries was a challenge.

The following are results drawn from this and the past items count surveys:
