The Office of Library and Information Services and the School Librarians of RI are pleased to be partnering for Reading Week 2017. Previously coordinated by the RI State Council of the International Reading Association, Reading Week is a time to not only celebrate reading, but to also promote libraries and the impact they have on children and families.
While Reading Week was traditionally scheduled for the week before April vacation, testing during April has made it difficult for many schools to participate. For 2017, schools are encouraged to schedule their Reading Week in May after the Kids' Read Across Rhode Island kickoff event on May 13th.
Beginning in 2017, the Reading Week slogan/theme will be the same slogan/theme used by public libraries for the statewide Summer Reading Program. The 2017 slogan is "Build a Better World" and the theme is building/architecture as well as kindness, community, and inclusivity. School libraries and classrooms may request thematic artwork to use in promoting Reading Week or the statewide Summer Reading Program by contacting the OLIS Youth Services Coordinator Danielle Margarida.
